Monday, June 3, 2024 - online professional development meeting Feature Presentation: Sales Forecasting - A New Approach Sales forecasting is becoming more difficult yet more important, as the future becomes less and less predictable. Mathematical models are limited, by nature, as they rely entirely upon history. Do we really want to predict where we are headed by looking behind us? Clearly, it’s high time for a change in approach. It’s important to recognize that forecasting in and of itself offers little value. It’s when that forecast is “connected” to a plan for the future, projecting resource requirements, financial performance (P&L and Balance Sheet), sales & marketing KPI’s, and trends, -- that it becomes integral to the planning and management of company performance. Forecasting needs to be done at two levels – the planning level and the scheduling level. They are NOT the same thing. Forecasts have traditionally been bashed as always being wrong. A more enlightened approach is to start with the assumption that forecasts will rarely be dead-on accurate, and to focus instead upon establishing a range of forecast error with which to plan. This talk will present a viable forecasting process, focused on four things:

Tuesday, April 16, 2024 - online professional development meeting Feature Presentation: Are you making the most of AI, ML and the IoT Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been employed in manufacturing and supply chain for a number of years. The World Economic Forum in 2018 discussed where the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI were making the largest impacts which included manufacturing, high technology and industrial work, logistics, and transportation. There is a lot to gain in using AI and machine learning in these industries. PWC posted a white paper in 2020 detailing the use of AI currently in use and its expected increase of use. Predictive maintenance, integrated planning, inventory, and data driven quality optimization were leaders in both current use and expected increase in use of ML in the next 5 years. However, machine learning is not without its shortcomings, it is not a crystal ball and cannot predict the future with 100% accuracy. Rather it uses the data provided and generates plausible outcomes based on the data. Therefore, it is crucial that the algorithms are given accurate and representative data sets to work with, else a bias is generated and the algorithm can do more harm than good. This session will discuss and explain the pros and cons of typical ML algorithms that are used in supply chain. Then provide three cases studies in three different industries where ML was used to improve supply chain performance. This includes reduced cost over runs due to excess inventory, predicting disastrous equipment break downs, and improving part availability which decreased emergency orders. Presented by: Danaka Porter, Regional Managing Partner of iota Consultants Danaka obtained her Lean certification in 2013 before completing her Master of Engineering in Systems and Supply Chain from MIT. Tuesday, March 26, 2024 - online professional development meeting Feature Presentation: MPS – the Missing Link between S&OP and MRP We think of Master Production Scheduling as an overall production process to define what, when, and how much to match demand against supply. It’s also used to identify resource constraints preventing companies from achieving its desired operational and financial plans. MPS transforms the S&OP / Production Plan into a realistic and achievable process in terms of its product detail, quantities, and time horizon to drive MRP. This includes different manufacturing environments, product variability, resources, inventory and service levels, and financial investment. During this presentation a number of challenges and possible solutions will be discussed that prevent it from properly managing and prioritizing customer demand, material, equipment and labor resources. Presented by: Howard Forman Howard Forman is president of PIM Associates. Howard has over 35+ years of operations and supply chain experience as a practitioner, author, consultant, and educator. He specializes in MRP; MPS; inventory reduction; cycle counting; SCM; operation and business process improvement; plus, education and training. Tuesday, March 12, 2024 - online professional development meeting Feature Presentation: Three Foundational Flaws in our Supply Chain Planning Processes Most of us in Supply Chain have come to expect there to be chaos. We struggle to provide stability in our planning horizon. We challenge our forecast numbers and even try to use Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to improve them. Working long hours and constantly changing our priorities, we endeavor to execute our plans to the best of our abilities.
We believe we are working in the direction of the solution, but success eludes us too often.
In his conversational style, John explores the possibility that we have foundational flaws in our processes that prevent us from achieving our goals. And wonders aloud if these flaws will prevent success until we realize the cause (at least partial) of our problems.
Join us for this Lunch-n-Learn virtual session with plenty of opportunity for Q&A.

Monday, February 26, 2024 - online professional development meeting Feature Presentation: The Future of Supply Chain Work… How Globalization & Digital Technologies Will Shape Global Supply Chain Management The way we manage global supply chains will be different in the future for a several reasons. These changes will be driven by FOUR underlying realities: 1. Work itself is being redefined. COVID-19 lockdowns inadvertently changed the trajectory of remote work. Office-bound employees are questioning the need to “go to an office” to execute their mostly digital work at the same time employers are questioning the need to invest in hard assets like buildings and furniture. 2. Information systems, especially cloud-based ones, are providing unparalleled insights through the layers in global supply chains. Planners and procurement professionals will be fully entangled, digitally allowing them to make decisions they may not have been qualified or approved to make previously. Information Rights And Decision Rights will ultimately move to lower levels in supply chain organizations. 3. Supply chain professionals are adapting to greater distances, increasing complexities, cross-cultural and multi-language factors faster than expected. This is almost entirely driven by direct supply chain management and adjacent technologies. 4. Supply chain practitioners at all levels have substantially more education in global supply chain issues, mostly due to universities retooling their supply chain related curriculum, and the substantial influence of the various ASCM certifications. When all is said and done, a day in the life of supply chain professionals will be impacted less by individual technologies and more by the convergence of powerful new technologies such as: 1. Cloud-based AI-assisted decision support tools that predict the quality of input data as well as output results in ERP-type information systems. 2. Deep and routine insights through multiple layers of suppliers, provided by global consortia information systems. 3. Enhanced voice, image and data communications capabilities that connect everyone all the time. 4. Substantial robotic innovations in material handling, distribution, logistics and warehousing. These driving technologies working in concert, will mandate global supply chain professionals build different skill sets. The process of reacting to system-generated action messages will be replaced with scenario recommendations with imbedded risk assessments for most critical day-to-day planning and scheduling systems. This transition to “outcome-based planning” will require INCREASES in critical thinking skills (CRS) and judgement, contrary to the popular view that decision automation will require less CRS and judgement. The goal of this presentation is to alert supply chain participants to the new skills they must develop to remain relevant and useful to their employers over the next two decades.

Tuesday, October 17, 2023 - online professional development meeting Feature Presentation: A Day in the Life of a Planner In a manufacturing or distribution business, on-time shipping and inventory performance depend heavily on the skills, abilities, and practices of planners and schedulers. These are the people who make decisions every day regarding due dates, inventory parameters, shop order schedules, capacity, purchase order/release requests, and reschedules. They also are a key source of information for customer service and the shop regarding the status of when shop orders will be completed. What they do every day and how they go about it are extremely important in the overall operational performance of the business. This presentation will show how to perform eight key activities that are essential every day in the life of a planner. They are: 1) respond to all e-mails and texts, 2) assess shortages, 3) review and take action on all “planned orders” having start dates inside the planning window, 4) review all open shop and purchase orders for valid dates, 5) review and take action on all move in/out notices, 6) update inventory parameters as needed, 7) provide support, and 8) monitor metrics. Plus, we will identify key informational and ERP prerequisites that enable planners to do this work effectively. Finally, we will show four metrics that planners should monitor daily and formally review monthly in the spirit of driving improvement.

Tuesday, September 27, 2022 online meeting Feature Presentation: Supply Chain Control Towers – Developing Affordable Options to Meet Specific Needs Visibility across the end-to-end supply chain is paramount to success in today’s turbulent economic environment and has created a hunger for better, faster and more integrated views of one’s business. Couple this with the high level of internet connectivity, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and almost instantaneous communication capabilities around the world we see tremendous opportunities to meet this hunger in ways few imagined only a few years ago. Dozens of service providers have blossomed into existence to serve this need. Blue Yonder, Pando, and o9 Solutions are just a few that pop up on a quick internet search. All the big consultancy’s have entire practices built to serve this market that has exploded in the last 10 years. SAP, Oracle and the other big ERP providers are building in visibility capabilities in their platforms. The term “Supply Chain Control Tower” is of course the buzz word that has come to represent this market. In 2019 Grandview research estimated the global control towers market size was valued at USD 5.28 billion and expects the market to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 16.7% putting the 2027 value at USD 17.24 billion. This means that even more solutions will be coming on the market every year and that they will get more and more sophisticated. They will also get more and more expensive. That’s fine for the multinationals, the large nationals and even the top end of the SMB’s. But what about the small companies, those with less than $200 million annual revenue. How do they stay competitive? This presentation will explore ways to leverage the off-the-shelf capabilities of readily available and relatively inexpensive software packages such as Microsoft’s Power Platform, Tableau, Google Data Studio, Alteryx, anyLogistix and others to connect disparate systems and create your own end-to-end solution at a fraction of the price. Presented by: Jerry Tice, Managing Director Consumer Segment, and Brandon Miller, Manager of Data Analytics and Visualization, both from Synergetics Installations Worldwide, a global managing consulting firm with deep expertise in Supply Chain Management, Performance Management Systems, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Business Value Creation. Schedule: (Eastern Time Zone) 6:45pm - Networking 7:00pm - Feature presentation 8:15pm - Wrap-up Location: ONLINE meeting using Zoom software. A meeting link will be sent out the afternoon of the meeting. Cost: Free for ASCM/APICS Akron chapter members. $20 for all others. Wednesday, January 27, 2021 online meeting Feature Presentation: Leading Change through Creative Problem Solving (CPS): Shifting the emphasis from operational process to engaging with how people think. Over the years, and partly due to technological innovations, manufacturing as well as other industries are finding themselves learning to adapt to competitive markets and rapid change. We have all heard the intensity of change is only going to happen faster, too. So, what is all this doing to the shop floor or operational environments? We may not have specifically given a name to these environments, such as VUCA - Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity or Ambiguity, however everyone in the organization has felt these principles. A few years after WWII, the Japanese began finding ways to add controls to these principles through the Toyota Production System. Right? Well, you know it later became Lean Thinking. And in some circles, a little twist and it blended into Lean Six sigma. What do you always hear with these operational processes? We must have buy-in from the users at the shop floor. Today, you are even finding other improvement processes and possibly others will be invented in our future to bring control over VUCA. Using Zoom, we would like to share a way to shift the emphasis from operational processes like 8D, PDCA, DMAIC or Kaizen to one of engaging with how people think such as CPS. No, not change these processes and tools but more the thinking within them. Creativity really is at the heart of Lean thinking and some others however it may take a back seat to more analytical thinking; controls depending upon how you were taught. Using CPS, let us find out together how we as leaders might earn that buy-in. Presented by: Anthony Pagliaroli and Joanna Sutton, from Bright Lights Innovations. Wednesday, January 16, 2019 = joint dinner meeting with Cleveland APICS chapter Feature Presentation: Import and Export Compliance The world was full of uncertainty in 2018 as importers and exporters faced a fast-paced and every changing regulatory environment. High-impact changes cut across industries including the Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum, the Section 301 tariffs on imports from China, and the ongoing NAFTA negotiations resulting in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (“USMCA”). Certain sectors also faced increasing seizures for intellectual property rights related concerns and increasing audits including for AD/CV compliance. The stakes are higher now more than ever. Every domestic company with foreign suppliers, customers, or operations is faced with the complexities of trade compliance. At best the compliance world is full of administrative considerations requiring close attention. At worst it is a world of supply chain interruption, unforeseen cost, civil fines, criminal penalties, and negative headlines. A little preparation will go a long way in 2019. Presented by: Jonathan Todd, Partner in the Benesch Law FIrm’s distinguished Transportation & Logistics Practice Group. Jonathan advises clients on transportation, logistics, warehousing, import compliance, export controls and economic sanctions, and related supply chain management issues. He leads those transactional and regulatory matters for manufacturers, distributors, retailers, third party logistics providers, brokers, forwarders, intermediaries, and carriers of all modes. His work spans the wide range of challenges that arise when clients buy and sell regulated companies, purchase and offer regulated services, procure and produce goods, deliver those services or ship those goods around the world, and manage regulatory compliance or respond to enforcement actions. Thursday, December 13, 2018 = joint dinner meeting with the ASQ Akron/Canton Chapter Feature Presentation: A Creative Hands-on Approach to Teaching Six Sigma While Lean Six Sigma has been widely accepted in manufacturing and service organizations, it’s acceptance in higher education has been slow. Universities are beginning to teach the concepts of Lean Six Sigma in courses, yet even fewer are actually applying these tools to their operations. Training and energizing students, faculty, staff, and administration to use Lean Six Sigma requires an interactive approach. Active participation by the learners is necessary for complex topics to be truly understood. This presentation will address a different model for teaching probability and statistics leading to an energized application of continuous improvement. To understand and remember a subject, according to experts in the field, three areas must be in place: useful, relevant and interesting. It is necessary to transform the classroom from a passive to an active environment to improve the learning experience, increase content retention, and improve student engagement. This presentation will demonstrate several unique and unusual techniques to teach probability, statistics, and design of experiments including two innovative audience participation card illusions that provide creative ways to engage students. This will be a non-technical and entertaining show. Spouses are welcome to attend. Presented by: Bill Hooper, William Hooper Consulting Bill Hooper is an adjunct Professor for the Center for Professional Studies in Technology and Applied Research at Purdue University at West Lafayette, Indiana in addition to President of William Hooper Consulting, a firm he started in 2012 with the mission of teaching and applying the concepts of Lean Six Sigma for small and mid-sized companies. His company’s business model is centered around innovative courses taught primarily hands-on using card and coin illusion, the sport of juggling and experimental helicopters to teach such areas as probability, hypothesis experimental method, statistical process control, capability analysis, regression modeling and Design of Experiments. Bill has taught the courses throughout the US, Canada and internationally in Africa and the Middle East. He has applied the model for large scale improvements in quality, downtime, rework elimination and cycle time reduction for manufacturing and transactional companies. Wed. May 4, 2016 = Member Appreciation and Top Management dinner meeting Feature Presentation: Emotional Intelligence, and IQ vs. EQ Research has shown that people with average IQ's frequently outperform those with high IQ's. Decades of research point to emotional intelligence as being a key factor that helps star performers perform better than the rest of the pack. Emotional intelligence is different than your intellect, and there is no known connection between your IQ and your emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence involves a set of skills that can be acquired, developed, and improved with practice. People with high emotional intelligence have both strong personal competence and social competence. Many companies now use emotional intelligence testing to evaluate potential new staff and candidates for promotion. This after-dinner presentation will share an overview of emotional intelligence, enable attendees to take an EI quiz, and learn ways to improve their emotional intelligence. Thursday, February 18, 2016 = joint dinner meeting with Cleveland APICS and ISM Topic: The Future of Manufacturing: Innovation and Globalization The Global manufacturing sector has undergone huge changes since the fall of large scale Socialism/Communism in the world. Only in a Capitalist economy can a country leap into the first tier of manufacturing nations, within 20 years. Manufacturing remains critically important to developing and mature economies. In developing countries, it continues to provide an economic revitalization from subsistence agriculture to rising standards of living. Manufacturing is also the catalyst for increased demand for personal services, as people become more affluent.
